Light Structures
Curated by Laura Hughes
Artists:
FalseFront is pleased to present Light Structures, a group exhibition curated by Laura Hughes. This exhibit marks the second in a series of group showings curated by regional artists with a discerning focus on concept paring and multidisciplinary selection. Hughes’ Light Structures assembles five artists, working independent of each other, each exploring light as subject, concept, material or effect. In conjunction, these artists communicate engagement with our visible surroundings: challenging our perceptual boundaries and the divisions separating habits of modern culture from the potential to see more.
Curatorial Statement:
Light radiates, projects, shifts, reflects and refracts. It is responsible for our sense of sight; revealing what is visible to the eye. It exists as an interface between humanity and the natural world. In ancient times, it was thought light was contained within the eye itself: emitting onto the seen object like aiming a lantern. We now understand light through modern science as electromagnetic radiation visible to the human eye measured by wavelength, frequency, speed, and direction. As visual sensation, it causes perceptual shifts in our engagement with familiar aspects of daily life. As aesthetic phenomena, it exposes the mysterious qualities of perception by activating the periphery of our awareness and elevating everyday occurrences toward the spectacular.
